Reading Ulysses in Montana #439

The armistice came like a leopard in the night, looking whom he might bum a candle off of for an overly atmospheric Sunday night bath.

The leopard-skin file could only drive one way, so the head of the machinist union put it in reverse to defile the smooth edges. The elephant-skin armor felt the blows of the leopard-skin defile, and all at once the lunatics stopped running the asylum and returned to their hotel suite where they locked the door and kept out any kleptomaniacs from the asylum in the next town over.

Silly gourds assembled to take the place of the lunatics, but the asylum staff had already returned to their posts running the asylum, and they kept out any and all usurpers. The asylum was forevermore theirs for the keeping. The midnight sun blessed the underside of the earth and left the weeping to the shiny bowlers, fresh off a packet from Mexico City.

“If only those lunatics could see us now!” the bowlers said. The pins parted and no one was left to pick up the spare.

A wonderfully surreal and imaginative piece of writing! The unexpected imagery, absurd humour, and playful contradictions invite readers to step beyond conventional logic and explore the freedom of the imagination. It feels like a dream in which every strange image carries a mystery of its own. Perhaps that is the beauty of experimental writing: it doesn’t always seek to explain meaning but encourages us to discover our own interpretations. A truly intriguing and thought-provoking read!
